Jan. 31 Goodbye, Prius. Hope you live on, either as scattered parts or with someone who can put in the time and work to keep you rolling along.
Jan. 30 My car was pronounced dangerous a few days ago. It's worth very little, though it can be driven. So, I ended up buying a Hyundai Ioniq 6 SE RWD, which was a little hard to find. I don't have it yet, need to go back with the cashier's check and for them to get it registered and the temporary tags. I had hoped to eke more time out of the old Prius, but it seems it wasn't meant to be. Lucky that I could do this. I figure I put about 1000 liters of gas a year into the air with the Prius, now that will be zero or close to it.
Jan. 26, again. Finally wrote a page about "my compiler" compiler.html and my current thoughts on programming.
Jan. 26 wanted to promote a FB post on Bluesky, and the 300 char limit is a real problem. Put it here: https://www.vin-dit.org/reich.html. Looking for a way for people to have dialogue without FB. Does everyone need a personal blog? Why has the web become like mass media instead of peer-to-peer????
Jan.23 again here is her whole sermon: 1.21.25 Sermon by The Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde.mp4.
Jan. 23 Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde is a hero! Here is a video of her speaking to Trump and being interviewed later. BishopMariannEdgarBudde.mp4
Jan. 20 a page on a map of the Middle East from 1942 I saw yesterday in the Brick Lane Market in London. palestine.html
Jan. 20 a cartoon by r crumb, last panel of a piece from 1989 I think. Crumb moved to France a couple years later, he had the right idea.
.
Jan. 19 again - I had copied some lousy style info from page to page, and now I have better style info and it's in a separate .css file. Slowly getting more like the modern web. Ideally things should look much better on a phone now. (the linked pages like Djimo-Chernoff.html).
Jan. 19 I was wondering what VSCode/Copilot would invent if I took its suggestion. It created a post about a fictitious, yet-to-happen White House initiative, complete with a URL to the announcement (which would have happened 13 days in the future and returned a 404). I really have a lot of doubts about this AI future. Apple is, I hear, removing their AI summaries that were getting the gists of stories completely wrong. We're going to restart Three Mile Island for this???
Jan. 18 again look what Biden did! https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2025/01/17/joint-statement-from-the-united-states-and-canada-on-haudenosaunee-participation-in-the-2028-los-angeles-olympics/
The Haudeenosaunee have been known as the Iroquois. They invented lacrosse. It's great for them to be able to compete as a nation, against the US (and everyone else).
Jan. 18 did a bike class at peloton London with Lisa (and Hannah Frankson as instructor).
pelotonLondon2025-1-18.mp4
Jan. 15 wrote a little thing about justifying text, relating to an early encounter with programming. justify.html
Jan. 14 again. Signed up to Starbucks Workers United on social media, https://crm.broadstripes.com/ctf/SJID0H. They've come a long way since they were founded (on Elmwood Ave. in Buffalo, no less!) . I expect to get news and info about strikes. Their slogan is "No contract, no coffee!" and I guess if they call a strike, we'd have to go elsewhere for coffee.
Jan. 14. Leaving tomorrow night for London, scheduled to take a class in the peloton studio with
will see if I can survive 😂
Jan. 9. With Mark Zuckerberg's announcement about ending fact checking, etc., I'm looking to bsky.app as an alternative to Meta/FB/Insta. Found some friends there, trying to suggest it to other people.
My profile: https://bsky.app/profile/jbtotheh.bsky.social. Jamie Zawinski is quite opposed to it, which is concerning. I don't see a viable alternative, though.
Dailymotion.com seems to be an OK place to post videos and you can share them on bluesky from the dailymotion app on an iPhone. Vimeo's free service by comparison is very limited, so vimeo doesn't look good, unless you want to pay like 12$ a month.
I cobbled together a script on my Macbook that will subtitle a video, but it's a little bit technical. Facebook groups could be replaced by email lists, if people were a little motivated.
I figure having your own videos saved on your own hardware is the best way to go-you can record them with your phone or webcam. On apple, they will be in your photos album and with the share icon you can get it to a .mov file in Icloud Drive, which you can rename and organize how you want.
I've been using yt-dlp to extract videos from youtube. again, a little technical.
I think the internet can be less controlled by corporations and less enshittified (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enshittification), but it might take a little work by people.
Jan. 7 again this reminded me of CoryHenryLovesInNeed.mp4 which I think Ben Hall shared a while ago, and which led to us seeing Cory H two times.
Jan. 7 wonderful video of Jacob Collier on Harpeji!!!hereThereEveryWhereJacobCollier.mp4

Jan. 6 Snow day - the view out our front window.
Jan. 5 This post on a web page, rachelbythebay.com, lists the many ills of the modern web. https://rachelbythebay.com/w/2025/01/04/cruft/
She is a very smart techie, much smarter than me, but these things are also true of my little vin-dit.org site. 😃
Jan.1 It's a new year! Hoping for the best from 2025, despite Trump. Pickling peppers.
